At a recent Hospitality Workshop, we shared our favorite attractions, restaurants, fun stuff to do in Guilford County. Some of these are well known attractions, and others are local favorites off the beaten path. You can tell we love our parks and food! What: Edward McKay Used Books & More

Why we love it: "Wide selection of used items at a fraction of the cost of new! Probably the place that I most often refer to patrons is Ed McKay's. Trade, sell, or buy books. Text books for students, movies, music, videos. Spend hours there! Over 30 years in the business of "feeding your head"."

What: Barn Dinner Theater
Where: located at 120 Stage Coach Trail (off of Friendly), Greensboro. Map it!
Why we love it: "This place has a really rich and long history and , in fact, is the longest continually running dinner theater in the country! This treasure, right here in Greensboro, makes for a really cool date or place to take a loved one, etc. I did some children's theater here in high school, and 'sort of' proposed to my wife Jaymie here, some 9-odd years ago, so the joint really holds a special place in me heart, but I think that for anybody, newcomers and those of us born 'n bred here alike, this is a very unique and fun destination, brimming over w/ music, laughter, and with mucho personality/character (pun intended)."

What: Castle McCulloch
Where: 3925 Kivett Dr. Jamestown, NC Map it!
Why we love it: "Guilford's Castle in Jamestown, NC! This unique place provides a wide range of activities. Meant as a special events facility, Castle McCulloch is so much more. Annual festivals and events throughout the year offer special occasions for adults and families. The most memorable for my family was the October Wizard of Oz trail that is in cooperation with the Community Theater of Greensboro. In addition, the year-round availability of gold panning makes this a destination worth a short trip. "
"Castle McCulloch is the home of the once McCulloch Gold Refinery. The mill was built in 1832 and served as an important part of the gold mining industry in NC."

What: Elsewhere Artist Collaborative

Why we love it: "This is one of those places that make you go hmmmm. They don't sell anything, and everybody is welcome. It's a place packed to the rafters with "stuff" objects, trash and treasure that you can move around to make a clear comment, a shrine to some obscure notion, sort things by type or color...whatever. They stage events and artists share their work and philosophies. You really have to see it to believe it."
"I love this place. I first stumbled upon it about 2 years ago, and ended up spending at least an hour browsing though the eye candy. Have returned several times since at about 6 month intervals, and it is never the same and always a treat. I highly recommend it for unique, nostalgic, mind-bending experience."

Gardens & Greenways
What: Pennisula, Osprey & West House Trails -- Watershed Trails off of Church Steet.
Where: North Church Street Directions: Head north on Church Street, crossover Pisgah Church Road and travel about 4 miles further. Just before (on the right) and just after (on the left and right) the Lake Townsend Bridge, you will see the trail heads (if you look carefully!) on the side of the road. Limited Parking is available.
Why we love it: These are beautiful trails in any season with little traffic.

What: Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden
Where: 1105 Hobbs Road, Greensboro. Map It
Why we love it: "The Bicentennial Garden is just beautifully landscaped, particularly in spring and summere when the flowers have bloomed. It's nice to walk through and there are picnic tables and benches for lunching and sitting. Photographers often go there to take photos, and there is a gazebo where you can get married. The Parisen Promenade is held there in May, as well as other special events throughout the year."

Why we love it: "The park features 2 playgrounds, a Merry-go-round, miniature train, excursion boat, miniature golf course, swimming pool, waterslide, gym, amphitheater, field stage, 10 picnic shelters, 1 gazebo, scattered tables, grills, 1 non-regulation ball field, concession/restroom/ticket booth building, historical buildings, maintenance complex, Fish Hut, and Camp Ann."

History & Architecture
What: Historic Architecture
Where: Downtown Greensboro
Why we love it: "Downtown Greensboro is on the National Register of Historic Places. It includes buildings from the late 1800s, as well as architectural treasures form the early 20th century, such as the Jefferson Building, the Carolina Theatre, the Woolworth Building and the Kress Building. Blandwood, built as a simple farmhouse before Greensboro was founded, later became the home of Governor John Motley Morehead, who expanded it into a fine mansion. The Woolworth and Kress buildings entered civil rights history as locations for the sit-ins movement of 1960. These are only a few of the sites in Greensboro's downtown area.
"If you'd like someone to explain the history and architecture of these historic sites to you, rent an MP3 tour from the Booklovers' Shop at Greensboro Public Library's Central Library, from the Greensboro Historical Museum's gift shop, or from the Carolina Theatre Box Office. This 90-minute tour is available for only $5.00 a day and allows you a great deal of flexibility. You can visit the sites in any order you like, skip some of the sites, or even take a break for lunch or for exploring some of the downtown area's small shops."

What: Natural Science Center of Greensboro
Where: 4301 Lawndale Drive, Greensboro
Whe we love it: "Facility offers different ways to explore natural science: animal discovery zoo, exhibits, touch labs, live reptiles, great planetarium, and solar observatory. Adjacent to building are outdoor picnic facilities, two small lakes, and nature trails."
"A fun learning experience for all ages. The Science Center includes a museum, zoo, planetarium, and gift shop among many other features."

What: Country Bar-be-cue

Why we love it: "This restaurant is located next to a girly joint called Christy's, not far from I-40. They've got great barbequed pork (I especially like the sliced variety), excellent apple cobbler and some of the best chicken around, served with a spicy dipping sauce. Try their 1/2 chicken special on Thursday and Saturday nights. They're ice tea is great too. "

Why we love it: "Good old Southern cooking here and a favorite with locals for years. Rolls and cornbread, ice tea, veggies, salads, meats, etc., with a quaint, downhome, sort of 60s-retro atmosphere."

What: Casa Vallarta Mexican and Seafood Grill

Why we love it: "We enjoy the informal atmosphere and often go with family and friends -- including the night we returned from Mexico! Their menu is extensive and includes some great seafood as well as other authentic and inspired Mexican items. "

What: Cincy's Downtown

Why we love it: "It's not necessarily my favorite place to eat, but it is good for lunch and quite unique in Greensboro. Cincy's serves Cincinnati-style chili which is very different than any other type of chili. "

What: Sticks and Stones Clay Oven Pizza
Where: 2200 Walker Ave., Greensboro Map it!
Why we love it: "This place is amazing. There is no pizza like this anywhere in Greensboro. The pizza is baked in a wood-burning, clay oven - no gas or electricity used. The ingredients are fresh and as local and organic as possible; they purchase as much as they can from the local farmer's market. Meats and cheeses are mostly from this area too! North Carolina beers and wines are featured. And the decor is beautiful!"

What: Loco for Coco
Where: 1420 D Westover Terrace, across from Lucky 32 Restaurant
Why we love it: "Upscale chocolate cafe offering unique and otherwise unavailable chocolate products." Hand made Belgian truffles in 26 varieties, as well as sugar-free varieties. It smells wonderful in the shop and they gift wrap chocolates beautifully. Very unique in this area!

What: Tate St. Coffee

Why we love it: They are "located on the edge of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) campus and are a part of the independent businesses that make up a thriving community. While in the heart of a university setting, regular visitors to the coffee house include not just students, but a great mix of professionals, neighborhood families, professors and just plain regular folk."

What: Yum Yum
Where: 1219 Spring Garden St., Greensboro
Why we love it: "When you hear the song Candy Man, you will think about Sammy Davis, Jr. However, when you mention Ice Cream Man in Greensboro, doubtlessly he is Mr. Aydelette, the Founder of Yum Yum. Everyone knows Yum Yum, even little kids. Yum Yum is known for its homemade ice cream, chili-smothered hot dogs and Cheerwine in glass bottles. Mr. Aydelette started selling ice cream from a pushcart in 1909, and churning out his own delicious homemade ice cream at Spring Garden St. since February 1922.If you are looking for an inexpensive eatery, with nostalgic 1950s décor, family oriented, a menu of all-American favorites and a touch of college campus life, THIS IS THE ONE!"
